Turkey Run: A Little Bit of Paradise

Locations

Indiana….. It has to be one of the flattest states in the entire country! Nevertheless, Indiana is our home. As people who enjoy hiking and exploring, it is easy to ask ourselves why we couldn’t live in Montana or Arizona or Utah! Somewhere with a little more scenery at least! I mean, besides getting lost in a cornfield or something, there just isn’t a whole lot of exciting landscape here in Indiana. However this last weekend our family was able to escape to Turkey Run State Park. Although it is still in Indiana, it almost doesn’t seem like it because there are actually hills, rocks, and canyons too! Believe it or not! It was almost like a little paradise! You know, kind of like an oasis in the desert only in the vast expanse of cornfields. It was pretty cool! Or as Gavin would tell you, it was “totally legit!” The area is mostly forest with many big trees and tons of small creek beds that run into the larger Sugar Creek, which flows straight through the park. The hiking trails, meandering through the woods and also down through various creek beds, were super fun and pretty easy to figure out and navigate without too much trouble. Nothing is too horribly strenuous, but you need to be prepared for plenty of stairs. Like I said, this place is nothing like the rest of Indiana. You actually have to climb and use your calf muscles a little. There are also some areas where climbing is necessary, because there are no stairs for those who think that stairs make things too easy. Also some neat things that give the park a really cool feel are the ladders on Trail 3 that climb a particularly steep section of a creek bed and the suspension bridge that crosses Sugar Creek. The overall atmosphere of the area is bright and very cheerful, especially on a nice sunny day. The day we spent there was very fulfilling, and in the end there’s no place I’d rather live than right here in Indiana.

I personally enjoy anything artistic. I love drawing, I enjoy painting, and I have messed a little bit with photography. So while we were there I was able to take a few photos which I will share with you! All of these I took with my iPhone because I don’t have a fancy, cool camera yet, but I hope you like them.

So yeah, there is Turkey Run State Park! We really had a blast and if you are ever in the area it would definitely be worth your time to stop by and see for yourself! By the way if you are wondering why it is called “turkey run,” I have no idea. Nobody really knows. There is speculation, but the real reason why it is called turkey run is unknown. As for the turkeys, I’m sure they are there but we didn’t see any…. Which I was a little bummed about, but, oh well.
