The Adventures of the Indiana Joneses
Hello family, friends, and fellow hikers and adventurists. I have been tasked to come up with a bucket list of things I want to do before I die. I don’t want to be completely shallow with the things I want to do because I want to honor God in all that I do, to have a wife who loves and cares for me every day, to have children who I can love and nurture in God’s word, and to live every day I have to its fullest. This is my ultimate bucket list, but I see more of a need for… Well, dangerous things I want to do for this blog. Keep reading
Well, I was all set to tell you about a few of the things I want to do before I die. About how I want to hike the Grand Canyon rim to rim. I was ready to tell you in great detail about my plans for a spectacular trip to Alaska—The Last Frontier. Or even the trip we’re planning as a family for May 2017 to backpack for a couple weeks in the backcountry of Utah. But things happen that bring us a moment of clarity. A time when we’re able to see things from a different and, quite possibly, better perspective. Such was the case this week as I was contemplating what I would classify as my top bucket list items. Keep reading
In this week’s post, I am going to share part of my bucket list. The others will be sharing theirs later, but I’m going first. Anyhow, I have three things that I have wanted to do for some time now and hope to do some day before I die. The first is: Keep reading
We’ve all seen them. You know the kind I’m talking about. They literally spend less than five seconds actually trying to roast their marshmallow before they thrust it into the inferno trying to speed up the process. Of course, we know the results. In another two seconds the innocent ball of processed sugar erupts into flames. The outside begins to blister and turn a black that only a blast furnace could make more heinous. As the unrecognizable blob begins to take on the likeness of a charcoal briquette, the person actually tries to convince those looking on in horror that they actually like them that way. No they don’t. Nobody likes blackened sugar. So let me help you with a few pointers to enable anybody to roast the perfect marshmallow. Keep reading
Somehow things never seem to go quite the way we plan. I drive a semi. I haul cars for a living. My wife used to ask what time I would be home when I left each morning. My answers have become more and more noncommittal over the years. Now, if she asks, I tell her, “From what I know at this point…” Because that’s just it. I know (know being a relative term) what I have to do for the day, but I have no idea what actually lies ahead. I could have any number of delays between now and when I should be home. I said all that to say this… Keep reading
Yes!…It’s fall! My favorite season of the year. Cool, crisp air that makes outdoor activities extra-enjoyable. Not to mention the vast number of activities to choose from: apple orchards, pumpkin patches, hay rides, bonfires, leaf watching, s’mores. Need I say more? Ah …. fall!!! I especially love hiking in the fall. Finding the perfect time when some leaves have fallen and crunch under your feet on the trail, and where other leaves in full color are still on the trees to enjoy. You can comfortably hike for miles in the cool temperatures. There is absolutely nothing more enjoyable, except for that one time…. Keep reading
What are the earmarks of the perfect hike. Well, I imagine that would vary from person to person about as much as what constitutes the perfect pizza. But, the point is if the pizza has the key ingredients that make it enjoyable for us individually then we all like pizza. If a hike includes the essentials that make it enjoyable for each of us then we all will enjoy hiking. Unless, of course, you feel that asphalt and a golf cart are essentials. In which case you have actually moved into something that can no longer be called hiking. So for those who call having to park more than six parking spaces from the front door of Walmart a hike, let me give you some of my essentials of a good hike. Keep reading
Not as in “get lost” or “go away.” I actually mean take a hike. Let’s face it. There is a broad spectrum of interpretations that flood the mind when someone suggests taking a hike. For the enthusiast, this conjures up a gamut of emotions ranging from excitement to downright euphoria. For the person less enthralled with venturing into the great outdoors (or physical exertion of any kind, for that matter) this suggestion ranks right up there with waterboarding and electro-shock therapy. So, I’ll give you a few of the things that hiking means to me and why I like to hike. Then, you can make up your own mind as to the what and why of the enjoyment that hiking brings to you. Unless, of course, you’re a slug. In which case, you won’t enjoy hiking. Mainly because it takes forever just to get where you need to go and you often get squished in the process. Typically by overzealous hikers! Keep reading
Over Labor Day weekend, we helped Justin and Camden move into their dorm rooms down in Florida. With the reality of them being gone until Christmas heavy on my heart, believe it or not, Michael had to talk me into going to the beach. Did you hear what I just said? I am a beach person. One of my favorite places in the world is the white sandy beaches of Fort Pickens, and he had to talk me into going!! Gavin said, “I want to come, but I’ll just be a ‘third wheel’!” (If you’ve never seen our favorite comedian Tim Hawkins’ song about the “Third Wheel”, go here. This is a must see—so funny). It will take a little while for Gavin to adjust to his new role of only child, but I assured him that we were the three musketeers instead—all for one and one for all! Keep reading
A few weeks ago we decided to get away for a couple days to relax by doing some hiking. Some friends of ours had done the same a couple weeks before and they said we should try out Clifty Falls State Park down by Madison, IN. It’s located on the Indiana/Kentucky border about halfway between Louisville and Cincinnati. Keep reading
