What do you do on a nice summer day? Why, anything with water – of course! Naturally, that’s the conclusion we came to on a summer day about 10 years ago. “Why are you telling us about something that happened 10 years ago!?” you may ask. A better question to ask would be “How can you REMEMBER this event from 10 years ago?” Honestly, it’s not hard. Bad experiences have a way of etching themselves in your memory. This past weekend we had planned to do something extraordinary. Something we had wanted to do for several years now. We were going to go to Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio and hike to the area waterfalls that are supposed to be absolutely spectacular when they are frozen in the winter. Usually things are rather frozen here in the Midwest in the middle of January. No problem. Just pick a weekend and go. Everything will be great. Keep reading

Somehow things never seem to go quite the way we plan. I drive a semi. I haul cars for a living. My wife used to ask what time I would be home when I left each morning. My answers have become more and more noncommittal over the years. Now, if she asks, I tell her, “From what I know at this point…” Because that’s just it. I know (know being a relative term) what I have to do for the day, but I have no idea what actually lies ahead. I could have any number of delays between now and when I should be home.
